Starting in the 1990s, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) have grown popular. They now represent more than 40 percent of car sales across the globe, with 30 million sold every year.
There are many reasons for this—a combination of style, space, and stellar driveability. But not all SUVs are created equal. With so many to choose from, it can be challenging to narrow down the one for you.
The Volkswagen Atlas has emerged as one of the most popular choices for drivers seeking a mid-sized SUV. In the last year or two, VW has added several options and features that have catapulted this vehicle to the top.
In the Volkswagen Atlas buying guide below, we will tell you everything you need to know about this vehicle, so you can decide if it’s right for you.
Volkswagen Atlas Review
Although the Atlas is bigger than many mid-sized SUVs, like the Telluride, it gets better city fuel economy. It has a spacious interior, three-row seating, and an expansive cargo area.
This makes the Atlas a great alternative to a minivan. It also comes packed with driver-assist and a range of other features, depending on the model you select.
Engine options include a turbocharged 235-horsepower, four-cylinder engine, or a robust, 276-horsepower V6. You can get either with front- or all-wheel-drive. They both provide superior driving and a steady ride for your passengers.
Volkswagen Atlas Features
Since its debut in 2018, the Volkswagen Atlas has had several renditions. Last year (2021), VW updated the front and rear with LED lighting. In addition, they upgraded the wheels and added the option of a traffic jam assist driving aid and a road sign recognition system.
One significant change in the 2022 Atlas is that Volkswagen dropped the S model, its most basic option. This was partly due to heavy demand from drivers for the many features the next model level up (SE) offers. However, the S model is still an option in the new 2021 Atlases for drivers looking for the most budget-friendly option available.
The 2022 SE base-level entry point has USB-C ports on the third row. V6 versions come standard with a trailer hitch. It has a forward collision warning and front-assist emergency breaking.
SEL models add a panoramic sunroof and a digital cockpit. It has traffic jam assist and adaptive cruise control. The SEL also has wireless smartphone charging.
The SEL Premium is the highest trim level, with a leather interior and parking assist. It has second-row captain’s chairs, an overhead view camera, and other features.
