The new 2020 Volkswagen Jetta has gone all out in its specs. But even more exciting is the Jetta GLI, which has been purpose-built for driving enjoyment.
There were two 2020 Volkswagen Jetta models released this year. There’s a standard version and the GLI. Learn the key differences in these two models now.
2020 VW Jetta And Jetta GLI At A Glance
If you’ve been waiting for the 2020 Jetta release date you are not going to be disappointed with the updates VW has made to this well-respected model. But what has really got people talking is the new Jetta GLI.
The GLI is completely performance-focused, delivering a more powerful and connective driving experience. The GLI features faster acceleration than the standard Jetta model, as well as much more responsive handling for more sporty driving.
Jetta and Jetta GLI Performance Specs
The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta comes standard with a 1.4-liter turbo-four engine. That equates to 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
By contrast, the Jetta GLI gives you a big bump up to a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. That takes the horsepower up to 228, while torque is lifted to 258 lb-ft.
The standard model Jetta runs at a fuel economy of 30/40 mpg. With its added power, the GLI model goes down to 25/33 mpg for the manual option and 25/32 mpg in automatic.
2020 Volkswagen Jetta Trim Options
There is also a noticeable difference in the trim packages between the Jetta and the Jetta GLI. The base-level GLI Jetta is fitted with the R-Line trim of the standard Jetta model. The R-Line features a sports steering wheel, heated cushions, bucket seats, leatherette upholstery, LCD monitor, WiFi, and smart device integration.
However, the base level GLI adds the following features:
- Independent rear suspension
- Limited-slip differential
- Larger brake pads
- Variable ratio steering
- 18in alloy wheels
- Sunroof
- Cloth upholstery
The GLI can also be upgraded to the GLI Autobahn, which comes with leather upholstery, digital cockpit instrument cluster, remote start, 8in touchscreen, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, and adaptive dampers.

Volkswagen Jetta 2020 Safety
Safety features are standard across the GLI and most other Jetta models. Except for the Jetta S model – Jetta’s entry-level trim – all 2020 VW Jettas come with blindspot monitors, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
Jetta Cost
The entry-level Jetta in 2020 is priced at $18,895. That price goes up with the different trim levels. For its boosted specs, the Jetta GLI starts at $26,245.
To make the cost of a brand new driving experience easier to handle, think about financing.
